                             Good News at LIC HS

Dear LIC HS Community,

This weekend two of our CUL seniors participated in the annual C-CAP competition at the International Culinary Center. Wendy Molina and Ryan Flores practiced tirelessly over the past few months for this moment and it showed in their final dishes. The national competitions are coming to an end upon which C-CAP will make their final determinations of awards.

                              GOOD NEWS AT LICHS

LIC Bulldogs are City Champions in Boys Gymnastics for the 13^th Time

 

                                                                    

The Bulldogs began their season with two veteran seniors, Andres Vela, and Sean Wong. The team was filled out by10 more boys who were either totally beginners, or with one year of experience. With a new head coach, Anthony Petrocelli, assisted by Ken Achiron, and many rookies, it sure looked like a rebuilding year. But the two coaches and the team, constantly worked to improve. They opened the season, winning against Tottenville, and faced a solid team at Stuyvesant HS where they won by only 0.2 in a very exciting finish, coming down to the last routine on parallel bars. That seemed to spark a “we can win this” attitude among the members of the team. From there it was stronger every day.

After coming in second in the LIC Invitational to JFK with a score of 112 and a much better finish than anticipated, they began to break out of the pack, defeating each of their opponents. In addition, Sean became the dominant figure in the city on the Rings, while Andres became the dominant player on the High Bar. Both boys were entered in the NY Invitational by the PSAL, a USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Tournament. Both medaled in the All Around and Sean won the Level 10 Rings. Having defeated JFK in their dual meet, the team entered the City Championships the next week, seeded first, with a 6-0 record in the dual meet season. Once again they defeated Kennedy to win the Team Championship, and Andres and Sean won their events of High Bar and Rings.

Having captured the team City Championship on Thursday night in a close battle with JFK HS, as well as the Individual All-Around City Championship which is also determined that night (Sean Wong), all that remained up for grabs were the Individual Event Finals held on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday, the City Champions were determined for each of the six events contested in Boys Gymnastics, and the top three in each event are declared All-City on the event. Long Island City HS had a tremendous finish to their season: Sean Wong won the City Championship on the Rings and on the Parallel Bars, while Andres Vela won the championship on the High Bar. Sean had already earned League Leader status on Rings, and Andres on High Bar for their top scores during the regular season. Both won All-City status on multiple events. Also having made it to the event finals and competing for Long Island City were Jesus Aguirre Perez, Alex  Tejeda, Ehab Abdalla, and Robert Torres. This year’s team had a regular season record of 6-0, going into the Team Championships. This was the 13^th Team Championship that LIC has won in Boys Gymnastics, continuing to lead the City. They were coached this year by Head Coach Anthony Petrocelli, and Assistant Coach Ken Achiron. Congratulations to the entire team and a word of thanks to all of the faculty that supported these boys making it more possible for them to spend afternoons in the gym and keep up with their classwork, as well as the custodial group that helps us maintain the best gymnastics facility in the City high schools.

 

FEBRUARY BULLDOG BLUE! ANNOUNCEMENT

CURRENT BULLDOG BLUE! PROGESS REPORTS

Teachers who teach period 2 will be receiving the Bulldog Blue! Progress Reports for February 2018 in their mailboxes by close of business on Monday, February 12, 2018.

We are distributing the Bulldog Blue! Progress Reports in four additional languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, and Spanish. Whether or not a child receives an alternate language version depends on the home language in our records. On the back of each alternate language Progress Report will be the English version as well for the student.

Teachers will be distributing these Progress Reports during period 2 classes to students on Tuesday, February 13, 2018. We ask that at that time they take a moment to explain the importance of being on track and staying on track throughout high school.

Please contribute to a positive climate by focusing on how this Progress Report can be used to inform students of their successes and guide them early to make modifications NOW to be successful in the future.

In addition, a copy of these Progress Reports will be mailed to parents along with their current report card listing their grades on January Regents.

BULLDOG BLUE! PROGESS REPORTS PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

The Bulldog Blue! Progress Report initiative has been on-going since the beginning of the school year.

Please remember that the Bulldog Blue! Progress Reports are designed to inform students and their families on student progress towards promotion and graduation throughout the year.

Students who are on-track will be Bulldog Blue! while students who are almost on-track will be Bulldog Purple. Off-track students will be Bulldog Red. The goal will be for students to be Bulldog Blue! in all three categories. 

As this report is generated every month, it will always include the most recent Marking Period scores, Regents results, and attendance rates.

A student’s attendance status is based on their current year-to-date attendance. The arrow on the report indicates whether or not their attendance has improved from last month.

As part of ongoing communication regarding promotion and graduation, students will continue to receive these Progress Reports throughout the school year.

BULLDOG BLUE! COMMUNICATION THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL

Furthermore, overall statistics to communicate progress for SLCs in both Attendance and Credit Accumulation is posted near the main and in each SLC. Please remind students that every child counts and that a successful SLC requires individual success!
